That night, Federline, 28, attended a listening party for his new single, "America's Most Hated," at the nightclub Pure. But Spears was a no-show at the gig, PEOPLE reports in its new issue.

The absence of Spears, 25, was made all the more evident when Kathy Hilton – Paris's mom – grabbed a microphone in the club's VIP area and yelled, "Mrs. Federline, come up here! Britney!"

JR: I was always just trying to work with talented dope artists in any genre. We just really made an effort to really get out there and work with all these people; I’m working with Mya, Jojo, Britney Spears, all that kind of stuff. Working with Britney specifically is great, I mean, she’s very talented and she’s just like a veteran, even though she’s young, she’s been performing and doing things for like 20 years. When you get in the studio with her, she’s focused; she knows how her voice is. Even writing, we wrote a song and I was really impressed by her creativity and how well she knows herself. She’s just dope, she’s a veteran.

The former back-up dancer looked to his family when he was writing songs for his new album Playing with the Fire, which is set for an August (06) release. Federline explains Spears inspired him "big time" adding, "My wife is an inspiration to me for life in general. "In some senses I feel I have to stick up for my family. "I want my son and my daughter and my other son to sit up there and look at daddy on TV and say, 'Damn!'"
